Why these Portland strippers want a union

June 9, 2023

Good morning, Portland! Want to drink at the zoo, or check out at a rose-strewn parade? Or maybe a story hour about life’s most embarrassing moments is more your thing. I have a bunch of events below for the weekend ahead.

What's CITY Talking About?

Portland’s First Stripper Union

A Northwest Portland club could become the site of the second stripper labor union in the U.S. — and Portland’s first. The unionization effort at the Magic Tavern comes after complaints about unsafe working conditions, including an improperly installed pole and a dancer testing positive for a date rape drug. Portland City Council Bans Daytime Camping

Faced with a growing number of people experiencing homelessness and increased political pressure to address the problem, Portland City Council is cracking down on homeless camps, banning daytime camping and charging police with enforcing it. [Portland Mercury]

Portland Police Want Shroom House Cash

The Portland Police Bureau began the legal process to seize cash they found in their raid on Shroom House, in addition to bank funds that combined for a total of $30,000. Psilocybin treatment for depression is legal in Oregon, but it’s not legal to sell psychedelics commercially, as Shroom House did. A Multnomah County judge has ruled that the police’s civil forfeiture case will have to await the outcome of an upcoming criminal trial against the shop’s owner. [KGW]

Sewage in the Willamette, Dangerous Train Crossings and Camping Ban Approved

Today we’re talking about updates on the daytime camping ban now that it’s passed, the growing wait times at train crossings, and the sewage spill in Lake Oswego that ended up in the Willamette River. Joining host Claudia Meza for this week’s news roundup is Portland Mercury news editor Courtney Vaughn and City Cast’s director of newsletters, Bryan M. Vance.

The concept that a private company can block roads for however long they want and there’s nothing a city can do about it just kind of blows my mind.
