What's CITY Talking About?

Clackamas Reconsiders Diversity Budget

Clackamas County Commissioners will consider eliminating the county’s $830,000 budget for diversity, equity and inclusion at the request of “Commissioner Mark Shull, who drew scrutiny in 2021 for comparing vaccine passports to Jim Crow laws and COVID-19 restrictions to the Holocaust,” the Oregonian reports. Support, Opposition to Camping Ban

Central Eastside business owners whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by camps testified in support of City Hall’s proposed ban on daytime camping. Advocates for unsheltered people say there’s no way to follow the ban. “It is not reasonable to expect people to pack up and disappear every morning when they have nowhere to go,” said Ed Johnson, a civil rights attorney at the Oregon Law Center. “It is unreasonable to throw people in jail for 30 days after two warnings for violating an incomprehensible law.” [OPB]

Aminé Gets New Balance Shoe

In an adorable Instagram reel, the homegrown rap star Aminé teases the arrival of his New Balance shoe. In the video, he and his friends look at a billboard that’s up on Northeast MLK that reads “A Kid From Portland Has His Own Sneaker” and ponder whether anyone will know it's about him. (Now we will.) The City Cast Portland podcast discusses a whistleblower's legal action over the Fire Bureau brass’s distaste for Portland Street Response. Catch up on that and other news from the week. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Today on City Cast

The Fire Department’s Whistleblower, How to Enforce a Camping Ban, and the Frozen State Senate

Today, we're talking about the momentum building for the city's proposed daytime camping ban, the filing of a legal notice involving involving Portland Street Response, and Republican legislators' continued refusal to report to work. Joining host Claudia Meza for this week’s news roundup are Willamette Week reporter Sophie Peel and our very own lead producer John Notarianni.

This story — I feel like that 'Saturday Night Live' character — has it all: It has cultural tension. It has misgendering. It has the dregs of the Jo Ann Hardesty legacy.

I hope you enjoy the sunny weekend!
