Portland parking will cost you more

May 19, 2023

Good morning, Portland! We have a mild spring weekend ahead of us. Check out the events below for ideas, aside from the obvious: backyard barbecues, picnics in the park, and hikes in the Gorge.

What's CITY Talking About?

Portland Population Decline

Portland and Troutdale, along with West Linn and Lake Oswego, are continuing to see a population decline that began during the pandemic. The city of Portland lost 18,200 residents from July 2020 through July 2022, according to the most recent U.S. Census data. Seattle by contrast has bounced back and was the fastest growing U.S. city from July 2021 to July 2022. [Oregonian/Seattle Times]

City Hall Halts Fee Hikes

Late in the city’s budget process, Mayor Ted Wheeler moved to scale back or halt fee hikes on water, sewer, and development fees, setting off a contentious budget hearing on Wednesday. Parking fees will increase by 20 cents an hour, over Wheeler's objections. Commissioner Mingus Mapps, the lone vote against Wheeler’s budget, argued that the change won’t “convince a single Portlander to stay in town.” [OPB/Oregonian]

800 Families on County Affordable Housing Waitlist

Eight hundred families with children are currently on Multnomah County’s waitlists for affordable housing. Families with children accounted for a third of this year’s increase in the unhoused population, which county officials said was due to better data collection. A family that spoke with KGW had camped outside and may do so again after finding their affordable housing complex dangerous. [KGW]

Newberg Votes Against Its Anti-LGBTQ+ School Board

Catch up on the week’s news, including this shocking special-election update: Newberg ended up with a more progressive school board. Also: West Linn elected a 23-year-old mayor. And Mayor Ted Wheeler wants to crack down on daytime camping. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
