Are Portland voters done with taxes?

May 18, 2023

Good morning, Portland! A school board candidate who barely campaigned won the election earlier this week, and it’s always a little bit of a surprise when Portland voters reject a tax.

What's CITY Talking About?

Portland Ban on Daytime Camping

Mayor Ted Wheeler is planning to ban daytime camping on city property, including sidewalks and parks. It’s not significantly different from past city policies, though it’s unclear if the consequences will be different for violating the new law when it’s approved by City Council. Beaverton already has a similar prohibition against daytime camping in place. [Willamette Week]

Candidate Allegedly Linked to Christian Nationalists Loses

After a Rolling Stone article on his alleged links to Christian nationalists, former deputy sheriff Derrick Peterson withdrew from the race for Portland Public Schools’ board, reentered, and withdrew again before losing on Election Day. Retired teacher Patte Sullivan won despite raising no money and earning few endorsements — at least before the Rolling Stone story. [Oregonian]

Suburbs Reject Conservative School Board Candidates

Suburban school board candidates that were backed by groups pushing for book bans or opposing sex education lost their elections. Hillsboro and North Clackamas, as well as Canby, voted against the conservative school board candidates. [Oregonian]

Warnings Against a Nuclear-Powered Future in the PNW

The Pacific Northwest has a long and complicated history with nuclear power. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington was part of the Manhattan Project, which also created the bombs for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And right here in Oregon, sits the remains of the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant. Here in 2023, NuScale Power, a Portland-area company promises a brighter future and cleaner energy source in the form of small modular reactors (SMRs). Host Claudia Meza speaks with Jan Haaken, a clinical psychologist and professor emeritus at Portland State University. She’s made a documentary called “Atomic Bamboozle” that draws from lessons of the past to address a new struggle to stop the production of SMRs in the Pacific Northwest.

You can have a nice picnic [at Trojan Park], but what is also out of view are the 32 casts of radioactive waste that will be there in perpetuity.
Janice Haaken, psychologist, author, and documentary filmmaker

I’m enjoying this part of spring with its sweet-smelling flowers — lilacs and peonies. I hope you are, too! See you tomorrow!
