The best spring hikes for the hot weekend ahead
May 9, 2023
Good morning, Portland! It’s supposed to be a dry and cloudy spring day. But by the weekend, it may feel more like the dog days of summer, with temperatures in the 90s!

What's CITY Talking About?
Intel Layoffs Coming
Citing a weak global economy, Intel is expected to make another round of layoffs. Last fall, Intel let go 500 workers in California and temporarily cut some workers’ pay earlier this year. [Oregonian]
Pit Bull Bubbie Impounded
The county had previously said it would take them a month to designate the pit bull named Bubbie as a dangerous dog even after it repeatedly bit a jogger. But on Sunday, law enforcement and animal protection worked together to impound the dog. It’s not clear if the owner will face criminal charges. [KGW]
Republicans’ Walkout Continued
Senate Republicans have walked out of the state Legislature for six days in a row, blocking the passage of legislation on guns, abortion, and transgender health care. Oregon requires a quorum of two-thirds of the members, so the Republican minority can shut down state legislative work, including on the budget. [Oregon Capital Chronicle]
Symbol of Wealth Downtown
Portland Business Journal real estate reporter Jonathan Bach and Suzette Smith, culture editor of the Portland Mercury, talk about why the ultra-expense and ultra-luxury of the 35-story, $600 million dollar Ritz-Carlton Portland has sparked strong reactions, on today’s City Cast Portland podcast. Where Is It?

This Joan of Arc statue sits in Laurelhurst’s Coe Circle, at Northeast César E Chávez Boulevard and Glisan Street. The man for whom the circle was named was Henry Waldo Coe, a physician, politician, and prominent Portlander, who donated the statue and three others to the city. The statue was a replica of a then-Parisian statue, erected here in 1925. It was to honor American soldiers who fought in France in World War I.
Many of you knew the spot and the statue, so a shout-out to the first 10 readers who responded: Autumn Rouse, Barbara Hinderer, Brian Catterson, Emily Craddick, Jimmy Falkner, Reagan Bauman, Scott Stroot, Tracy Ross, Yerika Ortiz, and Yvonne Recchia.

I’ve started noticing murals by Calm. He's a favorite of a fellow Portland muralist, so this week here's one of his. Do you know where this one is?

Today on City Cast
Is Portland Ready For the Ritz-Carlton’s Ultra-Luxury?
The 35-story, $600 million dollar Ritz-Carlton Portland is getting ready to open this summer. It will be home to some of the most expensive real estate this city has ever seen. So how do we feel about this new slice of Portland ultra-luxury? We’ll break it down with Portland Business Journal real estate reporter Jonathan Bach and Suzette Smith, culture editor of the Portland Mercury.
It speaks thematically to a lot of things that are important to Portlanders: the food cart story, luxury living, who gets to live downtown versus who doesn't.
I’ll see you tomorrow.
