We’re officially in king cake season — lovingly known as “rosca de reyes” in my household — a time to celebrate Mardi Gras and the Christian Epiphany holidays with a sweet treat and a hidden doll. If you’re in search of a cake of your own, our friends at The Oregonian have some suggestions for where to get king cake around Portland.

Here’s what else is cooking in Portland’s food and drink scene:

Mama Bird is Rebranding

Portland chef Gabriel Pascuzzi announced he is rebranding his restaurant Mama Bird into Bistecca, a wood-fired steakhouse with Italian flare. Mama Bird will close Jan. 26 for a brief remodel, then reopen as Bistecca Feb. 7. [Oregonian]

Haitian Flavors, Portland Pride

Dieuson Alix immigrated from Haiti in 2016 and recently opened Portland’s newest Haitian restaurant, TapTap Cuisine, as a tribute to his mother’s sacrifices and a vessel for Haitian culture. Alix and his mother celebrated Haiti’s Independence Day, Jan. 1, by serving Soup Joumou, a pumpkin soup symbolizing freedom and unity. [KGW]

High Costs Hit Two Portland Staples

Gourmet donut chain Blue Star Donut is closing two of its six Portland locations — Lake Oswego and Mississippi — citing rising costs. The closure comes just weeks after Anna Bannanas, one of Portland’s oldest cafes, announced it was closing after 35 years. [Portland Business Journal 🔒]

Local Influencers Take Bite Out of Controversial Food Takes

There’s no shortage of culinary delights around Portland, but no topic is safe from polarizing debate on the internet. From teriyaki-flavored ice cream to pizza pop ups, local food TikTokers weigh in on their favorite (and least favorite) spots. [Oregonian 🔒]
