Portland's Under-Appreciated Late Night Food Scene

00:00:00

Hunger hits us at all hours. So where do you grub when you’re craving some good eats late into the night? We’re big believers that late-night food spots make a city what it is. So we took on the tasty task of finding the best places to get great food open until at least midnight — and focusing on places beyond the usual Portland go-to's.

We’re sharing our extensive list on today’s City Cast Portland. Here’s a preview of what made the cut:

North Portland

🍝 Sit Tite, North Interstate Avenue

Open until 2 a.m. on the weekends and midnight on weekdays, head here for delicious Italian food and a rustic vibe that City Cast Portland’s senior producer Giulia Fiaoni says is reminiscent of her childhood. Try the rigatoni carbone for a massive plate of spicy vodka pasta.

Northeast

🍖 Hale Pele, Northeast Broadway

This tiki bar’s food menu is not hyped up enough. We’re big fans of their crab rangoon dip, served with crispy, oily wonton chips. Open until midnight nightly, this is a great place to get a fancy cocktail and a whole lot of great apps.

Central East Side

🥒 Moon Pocha, Northeast 28th Avenue

This Korean pub and tapas restaurant is great for big groups and patio dining. Some menu highlights include the cucumber muchim for a mustard-wasabi flavored salad, and the kimchi pancakes. Open until midnight Tuesday through Sunday.

🌶️ Thai Champa, East Burnside Street

Great news for spice lovers: This spot is serious about the heat! Run by a couple, you’ll find them in the parking lot of Union Jack. This food cart is open til 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and midnight during the week.

West Side

🦐 Som Tum Thai Kitchen, Southwest Broadway

“It’s becoming one of my favorite restaurants in town. By far my favorite Thai food in town,” Fiaoni told us. Open until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and midnight Sunday and weekdays. From the minced duck, the pandan lemongrass drink, and raw fish options, the deliciousness is endless.

🥪 Side Eye, Northwest 21st Avenue

While more of a cocktail bar, their food menu is not to be missed. The mortadella and cheddar grilled sandwich was crispy and gooey in all the right ways. Plus, the menu had lots of affordable options. Open until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and midnight Sunday and weekdays.

Southeast

🍜 Short Round, Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard

Fiaoni says this is her “favorite late-night spot in all of Portland.” This family-run Vietnamese restaurant has amazing beef noodle pho and banh mi. Short Round is open until 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and midnight Tuesday through Thursday.

🥗 Double Dragon, Southeast Division Street

Just because you’re eating late doesn’t mean it can’t be healthy. This pick is from City Cast Portland’s executive producer John Notarianni, who highly recommends the kale caesar salad with an egg on top. They’re open until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and midnight Sunday through Thursday.

🌯 Kay’s Bar, Southeast Milwaukie Avenue

The buffalo chicken wrap here is so good that Fiaoni thinks about it all the time. Plus, they’ve also got a late-night happy hour menu. Kay’s is open until 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and midnight Sundays and weekdays.

🤙 Da’ Hui, Southeast Foster Road

Open until 2 a.m. daily, this restaurant is serving delicious classic Hawaiian eats. We recommend any of their plates that come with sides like rice and potato mac salad. We especially love their garlic and teriyaki chicken options.

🎤 Ka-Te Portland, Southeast 82nd Avenue

This restaurant is open until 2:30 a.m. daily, and we loved their fish sauce wings, salt and pepper squid, and special fried rice. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t find it at first! It’s sort of hidden because you enter through the back door. You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you hear people singing karaoke.

😋 And so many more spots!
